The town is home to 1,200 people as of the 2000 census and the historic Bolivar Lighthouse, which once guided ships entering Galveston Bay. It is a bedroom community and oceanfront resort for Beaumont, Houston, and Dallas and is becoming the Hamptons of the Texas Gulf Coast. The community has 27 miles of sandy beaches including the popular Crystal Beach as well as a large amount of undeveloped and protected land.
